'Protect Us' film communications toolkit - WeProtect Global Alliance

Background

Children as young as 11 are being targeted in an increasing number of cases involving generative artificial intelligence (GAI), prompting the launch of a public awareness film from WeProtect Global Alliance and a call for united action to prevent further exploitation of children and young people.   

The Protect Us film – produced by WeProtect Global Alliance – was officially launched at the DLD conference in Munich on Friday 17 January 2025.

The film lays bare the horrific reality of generative AI’s misuse. The film draws on real life case studies and use the voices of actors to highlight the risks posed by generative AI by focussing on three scenarios – sextortion, AI chatbots and deepfakes/ ’nudification’.

It urges viewers to demand accountability from tech companies and policymakers, as well as to educate parents, caregivers and young people about the risks generative AI poses. The film is available to view and share at: https://youtu.be/OuH-D-au1Ho

Key messages

The rise of generative AI has created a seismic shift in technology, but it has also unleashed an unprecedented wave of danger for children worldwide.
The technology is being misused to create photorealistic child sexual abuse content.
WeProtect Global Alliance has launched ‘Protect Us’ – a public awareness film and a call for united action to tackle AI-generated child sexual abuse and exploitation.
Together with WeProtect Global Alliance, we are calling for: 
- Governments to implement stringent regulations on AI tools to prevent their misuse. Mandatory safeguards must be built into these systems. 
- Tech companies to take responsibility by developing robust monitoring mechanisms, adopting ethical AI practices, and being transparent about their efforts to curb abuse. 
- Parents and guardians to educate themselves about the dangers of generative AI, stay vigilant about their children’s online activities, and foster open conversations about digital safety.

A new short film has been launched by WeProtect Global Alliance to raise awareness about the growing role of generative AI in the global crisis of child sexual abuse and exploitation online. ‘Protect Us’, lays bare the horrific reality of generative AI’s misuse through the perspectives of three young people.

The 17-minute film aims to raise public awareness about the issue and calls for united action from governments, tech companies and parents and educators.

Blogs

We know many of our member organisations are already working on this important issue. You may wish to use the release of the film as a way to further highlight the positive work you are already doing in this space, reinforce your membership of the Alliance and support the calls to action by publishing a blog on your website or social media.

If you work with children or survivors, they may also be interested in writing about the perspectives.

Film screening

You may wish to hold a screening of the film and use this as a way to engage partners in discussions, or as a way to educate parents or other stakeholders about the issue. You could do this online, or host an in-person event. If you need to access the film in an MP4 format, please contact us.

Staff meetings

You may wish to share the film in a staff meeting to prompt further discussion about your organisation’s work on generative AI, or to build awareness of this as an issue.
